Last week, in our blog, “Fall is the Best Time for planting Grass Seed,” we outlined the benefits of planting grass seed in autumn, as opposed to the other seasons. Why? The weather. As we explained last week, fall seeding is much more successful than spring seeding (and especially summer seeding) because of the cooler nights and long warm days. However, there is more to planting grass seed than just the weather. You also need the right soil.
Fall is still the Best Time for Planting Grass Seed, but Soil matters too!
- Soil PH: New grass sprouts respond to acidic soil like a new baby does to sour milk. It tastes it and won’t take anymore, resulting in stunted growth, weak coloration, vulnerability to disease, take over by weeds and even death during distressing weather. This is why the soil should be tested for PH to make sure it is not acidic. The preferred range is between 6.2 and 7.0. If you find your soil to be too acidic, don’t fret; soil PH can be corrected by adding an acid neutralizer, like lime, at correct application rates with a lawn spreader. And while Older pelletized limes took up to 60 Days to be most effective. A recent innovation in soil care, Mag-I-Cal from Jonathan Green, begins to neutralize acid immediately.
- Nutrients: Often, soil nutrients can’t be released and made available for roots to take them up because there is an inadequate number of microbes in the soil to break food down and make it readily available to new plants. Microbes are encouraged by adding organic top dressings like Bumper Crop or Love MY Lawn…Love My Soil to lawns. Microbes are hindered and/or destroyed by adding chemicals to the lawn. A balance of applying appropriately timed lawn foods along with occasional top dressings will provide the optimal conditions for a great lawn and increased home values.
- Weed Control: Lawn weed controls need a 30 day gap before or after seeding. The weed controls will either sterilize new seeds or kill new young grass if not timed properly.
- Lawn Mowing: Lawns perform best when they are consistently mowed with no more than 1/3 cut off of the grass. This leaves enough green leafy structure to promote chlorophyll development and cell structure enhancement in lawn grasses.
