General Feeding Tips
Most species are migratory, only coming
to North America in the warm spring and
summer months.
Make sure feeders are up in time for
their arrival. Usually mid-April. Timing
will depend on where you live from south
to north. In the deep south arrival may
be as early as January.
Until hummingbirds arrive, change nectar
every 2 to 3 days. Nectar is highly
susceptible to mod, harmful bacteria or
fermentation. Wash feeders out with hot
water (add some vinegar to the water to
remove mold. Rinse thoroughly)
Keep feeders full. Empty feeders will
discourage birds from returning. Leave
feeders up for three weeks after your
last sighting.
Hummingbird Food
While you can make your own (1 part
sugar to 4 parts water) it is best to
purchase a commercially prepared
product.
If you elect to make your own, boil the
sugar water for 2 minutes and let cool
before using.
If you put in more sugar, birds will
come less often and if you decrease the
sugar, they may not come at all.
